This grant provides a subsidy on smart cards to cover food supplies and has been implemented with the World Food Programme (WFP) and Global Communities through electronic payment by way of "PalPay" accredited e-payment centers.
The signing ceremony was attended by His Hisham Al-Shawa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bank of Palestine Group; Samer Abdel-Jaber, World Food Programme Regional Director and Representative in Palestine; Mahmoud Al-Shawa, Chief Executive Officer of the Bank; Lana Abu Hajla, Director of Global Communities; and Thaer Hamayel, Chief Executive Officer of PalPay, in addition to several senior managers from the bank, WFP, and Global Communities.
It is under an agreement signed that the Bank of Palestine will issue $500,000 to be used by the UN's World Food Programme for funding electronic cards availed to families in Palestine for food supplies.
The World Food Programme will collaborate with Global Communities in the distribution of such cards to poor families. Thirty percent of the food baskets will be distributed in the West Bank, while seventy percent will be distributed in Gaza through the electronic cards authorized by PalPay, usable at more than 300 contracted stores and supermarkets with the World Food Programme.
Hisham Al-Shawa said in a statement that he was pleased with the cooperation and partnership between the bank and international organizations, such as the World Food Programme and Global Communities. "We are proud to participate in this humanitarian campaign, which embodies the strategic direction of the bank in the fight against poverty, hunger, and humanitarian causes for our people everywhere."
He added, "The distribution operations will take into consideration the most urgent living needs of Palestinian families, especially those who are going through difficult economic conditions during the holy month."
Samer Abdel-Jaber, in turn, praised the continuous support of Bank of Palestine to humanitarian issues and said that "this partnership is a model to be followed in the collaboration between humanitarian and developmental organizations, and the private sector sharing the same vision for improving the living conditions of Palestinian families."
He added, "We can create meaningful change in people's lives by combining our knowledge and resources and trying innovative approaches, starting with an essential form of food assistance during the month of Ramadan.".
For her part, Lana Abu Hajla expressed her gratitude for the generous gesture of Bank of Palestine in supporting poor families, considering this campaign a way to enhance the spirit of human solidarity within the community and an opportunity to participate in charitable activities during Ramadan.
